Brachyspira aalborgi is an extremely slow growing and fastidious spirochete, which previously had been isolated from an HIS patient in Denmark.

1164

Brachyspira aalborgi accounts for a small fraction (less than 1%) of cases of acute appendicitis. Subspecies of Treponema pallidum are responsible for four diseases: syphilis, pinta, bejel, and yaws. Syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum (a pallidum variant), is transmitted sexually.

Three Brachyspira species have been reported to colonize humans: Brachyspira aalborgi, Brachyspira pilosicoli, and the provisionally named “ Brachyspira hominis ” (3 – 7). Although it is unclear whether HIS is associated with clinical symptoms, there is evidence suggesting an association between B. pilosicoli and diarrhea in humans ( 3 , 8 – 11 ).

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. aalborgi, of Aalborg, named for the Danish town Aalborg in which the rectal biopsies containing the spirochete were taken from human diarrheic patients . Gender: feminine . Type strain: 513A; ATCC 43994; CIP 104603; NCTC 11492 Two species of intestinal spirochetes have so far been isolated from humans, namely, Brachyspira (formerly Serpulina) pilosicoli and Brachyspira aalborgi. The majority of the isolates have been referred to as B. pilosicoli ( 9 , 19 , 20 , 29 , 30 ).

Chemoorganotrophic, using various carbohydrates for growth. Possess NADH oxidase for reducing molecular oxygen. Consume oxygen during growth in culture broth beneath a 1% oxygen atmosphere. Brachyspira aalborgi An extremely slow-growing and fastidious gram-negative, oxygen-tolerant anaerobic spirochete, which has been isolated from human intestinal spirochaetosis (HIS); believed to be a more common cause of HIS than B pilosicoli, as was previously reported. Brachyspira aalborgi Hovind-Hougen et al. 1983 Nomenclatural History The species Brachyspira aalborgi was originally described by Hovind-Hougen et al. 1982 .

Recent studies using polymerase chain reaction amplification of DNA from intestinal biopsies from a series of cases of HIS in the general Western population demonstrated that B. aalborgi , rather than B. pilosicoli , was the main spirochete species involved in these patients. Brachyspira aalborgi

B. aalborgi was identified in specimens from 24 (85.7%) patients and B. pilosicoli in those from 4 (14.3%) patients (2 of whom were also positive for B. aalborgi). For two patients, no product was amplified. This study demonstrates that B. aalborgi is much more commonly Brachyspira hyodysenteriae was already known as a cause of swine dysentery in veterinary practices.

The maximal cell width is about 0.2 µm.

Species are differentiated by 16S rRNA gene sequences and genome DNA homology comparisons (chemical and digital).
